For the Villegas siblings dancing is not just a hobby, it’s a way of life. I knew that one of my really good friends from school, Veronica, loved dancing. She was on her school’s dance team in high school and in college. When she told me her brother was also a dancer, I knew this family had the dancing gene. Her brother Christopher, however, is pursuing dancing professionally as a singer and dancer for Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. You know… all of the impressive, fun shows that the park puts on with all the perks like fireworks, Disney characters, and sometimes even celebrity guests? Well, you can find Christopher performing in them!
I recently had an interview with Christopher via email and he let me in on all he does. He’s currently working on two shows around the park full-time. One being, Dream Along with Mickey which is actually performed in front of Cinderella’s Castle! Along with Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Goofy, he says, “there’s a ton of other characters, princesses, and such in the show. It’s the epitome of Disney magic…fireworks, good defeating evil, the whole nine yards.” He’s also working on a holiday show, A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas which features Buzz Lightyear.
Christopher enjoys his job a lot and let me know that he always makes himself available. He said, “wherever there’s a need for professional performers around Disney, I’m their man.” Of course, when you’re doing what you love is it really work? He went on to say, “I’m kind of a workaholic, so I’m always saying yes to whatever gigs they request me for. I’m currently on a 19 day stretch of work without a day off…I can sleep when I’m dead right?!” Wow talk about dedication! I had to ask him with keeping busy with so many shows which one was his favorite. He admitted that was a tough question, but said “I’d have to say that the ones that aren’t in direct sunlight tend to leave me better memories than the others. The Florida sun can be brutal!” I can definitely understand that!
You can actually see Christopher in action soon without having to go to Disney World! He just wrapped up the prerecorded, Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade which is shown every Christmas morning on ABC. This impressive show gave him the opportunity to perform many big artists like Jennifer Hudson and Justin Bieber. When I asked him about the experience he said, “There were a ton of big names walking around that day, so the energy was awesome…we rehearsed for about a week, filmed over the course of 2 days…” The best experiences for him was performing with Justin Bieber, saying,
It’s not very often you get to not only perform with, but actually be in rehearsals with one of the biggest pop sensations in the world. It was awesome being in a working environment with him, his dancers and his management team….the actual performance was something I’ll never forget. I mean, how many people can say they’ve danced behind Justin Bieber? I’m definitely blessed.
You can watch the recording of the performance, filmed by an audience member, below. Christopher comes in around 1:50.
So as I ask all of my interviewees, what’s next for Christopher Villegas? We can find him at Disney for while “at least for the foreseeable future”, he said. He went on to say, “the company has afforded me amazing opportunities and there are so many different avenues and pathways you can take with the company…its a great place to be.” Well I’m sure he’ll be making lots of future visitors happy with his passion for performance. And he’s not planning on turning down other great opportunies that come his way either, “This business is all about being acutely aware of who’s around and what opportunities they could potentially offer, so I’m always living and performing full-out.” He has even considered television for the future, but right now he’s living in the moment.
I’m taking it a day at a time and living in the moment as much as I can. Too often people are so concentrated on climbing the ladder to success that by the time they get to the top they’ve missed out on all the amazing experiences and successes that got them there. I’m enjoying the process…enjoying my completely blessed life.
